I wasn’t sure how to write this page so I put it off for a long time. I was trying to decide whether I hire someone to write this page for me or just tell you who I am in my own words. I’ve decided the best way to go is to just tell you my story and how I got to be a ‘Certified eBay Business Consultant’ trained by eBay! It’s been a long journey but if you’re interested in how I got here and why I’m qualified to teach others to do what I’ve done for years, keep reading!
I’ve been an active member of the eBay community since 2001. I started out like most people as a buyer. I’m a Snoopy collector and when I did my first search on eBay for ‘Snoopy’, about 15,000 items were found! Needless to say, I went on a shopping spree and my mailman was wondering what was happening with packages coming to my house every day!
Right around that same time, I was starting to change directions of what I was doing with my business. I had just spent months writing a business plan focusing on website development when I was offered a contracting position to teach disabled veterans basic computer skills. I sat next to them, in their own home and taught them how to use a computer. What I found over the years was that people who knew I spent alot of time on eBay wanted to know how to find things at bargain prices, too!
Eventually, I started to sell some of my own stuff on eBay. Again, my students got wind of that and wanted to know how to sell THEIR stuff on eBay, too! I started teaching exactly how to do that. The students I had at that time were either physically or mentally/emotionally disabled. What I realized at that time, kind of like what Oprah calls an “AH-HA” moment, was that it didn’t matter to a buyer who was selling an item to them. There was no discrimination. All that mattered was that they were getting their item. I saw my students change once they had a sense of responsibility knowing that someone was depending on them. Someone gave them their money and was expecting a product in return. Some of these disabled veterans who would get up in the morning and sit in front of the tv all day or sleep, were now getting up, checking email, listing items and shipping out packages! For the average person, that might not seem like a big deal but for some, this was a life-changing opportunity for them.
I realized that there was a market for teaching people how to sell on eBay. If eBay was difficult to figure out, it wouldn’t be as successful as it is. However, not everyone can just sit down in front of a computer and figure things out on their own. They need to be shown or need to have someone who has ‘been there’ to answer their questions. That’s what I decided I would do. In 2004, I took eBay’s online course and met the criteria to become an ‘Education Specialist’ trained by eBay. As of March 2013, I’m one of 37 people in the country who is a Certified eBay Business Consultant trained by eBay.
Not only was I teaching how to sell on eBay, I was still selling my own items. I purchased merchandise at wholesale prices and worked hard to become a PowerSeller and currently have over 2500 positive feedback comments. (A PowerSeller on eBay has at least $1000 a month in sales.) My seller ID is auctionsalestraining and you can visit my virtual eBay store by clicking on the link. I still sell but focus more on teaching others how to sell. I teach small groups or private sessions for more personalized instruction. I can do this in person, online or over the phone.
